Azad Maidan, Mumbai
February 8th 2024

Original canvas painted LIVE at the Azad Maidan by world renowned artist, Andy Brown. Capturing local Indian boys and girls playing cricket.

I visited the Azad Maidan on Thursday evening to see the local cricket prospects honing their craft. It is a huge expanse of land between the Churchgate and Fort districts of Mumbai. The infamous Bombay Gymkhana cricket club is located on the southern side (right of painting). The Bombay Gymkhana was the ground where the first ever Cricket test match in India was played on 15th December 1933 between England and India. Behind the Maidan is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) (formerly Victoria terminus) train station built in 1888.

As the sun was setting and I was painting the action before my eyes I was approached by eleven year old girl called Tapasya. She was the daughter of a lemonade salesman who worked just outside the maidan. She liked painting so stayed and watched as my canvas came to life. While I was working we chatted about her school life and interests. School starts/ finishes 7am / 1pm, her favourite sport was volleyball and English was her favourite subject. She loved reading stories! We laughed at the weary cricketers walking across the ground with their pads and bats and the dogs sat in the shade enjoying it all. As is often the case in my work the characters I meet make their way onto the canvas. Tapasya features in the bottom right corner. Also included is Mickey Mouse who was on her sweatshirt. He can be seen ino the distance amongst the crowd of young cricketers.

Also inlcuded – Other lemonade sellers, the Indian flag flying on the building on the left side and much much more!
