God Save the Queen

In June 2002 I was finishing my degree in Fine Art (Painting) at Loughborough University. As part of my final degree show I made a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II using tea bags. I stitched around 1000 onto a piece of hessian which created a portrait of Her Majesty unlike any other. I chose this unorthodox material and method to examine ideas of nationality, heritage, culture and the fragility of an icon / life.

This artwork has gone on to receive a huge amount of attention throughout the years. Appearing in numerous newspapers, magazines and on TV and radio stations around the world. I also received a letter from Buckingham Palace in response to the portrait and there is even a question about it in the board game Trivial Pursuit.

On this the 20th year since the original artwork was made, I am making a new piece, marking the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.
