Description

Griffith Stadium, Washington D.C.

Historic home of the Washington Senators from 1911-1961. Griffith Stadium was also home to the Homestead Grays during the 1940s.

Griffith was venue of the 1937 and 1956 All-Star game and hosted world series games in 1924, 1925 and 1933 and the Negro World Series in 1943 and 1944.

In the National Football League (NFL) it was the home stadium for the Washington Redskins for 24 seasons from 1937 to 1960.

A large scale mixed media drawing created using charcoal, chalks and erasers. Working in a large energetic way this drawing uses a wide variety of mark making which construct this image. The varied techniques give depth, expression and produces a vigorous study of this historic ballpark. The manner of addition and subtraction speaks directly to the legacies of our sporting venues, very much part of our geography, history, identity and communities, both in their presence and also removal. At a distance the marks fuse together building the stadium and surrounding area which when viewed closer disappear.
